Located along the serene Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California, Nobu Malibu stands as an iconic dining destination renowned for both its exquisite cuisine and its breathtaking views. Upon arrival, guests are immediately immersed in a setting that transcends expectations, with sweeping oceanfront views that make even the wait for a table an experience to relish. The calming sound of waves and the sight of the sun dipping into the horizon set the tone for what would be a remarkable evening of culinary excellence.

While waiting to be seated, grabbing a drink at the bar was not just a distraction, but an essential part of the experience. Nobu Malibu’s lively yet refined atmosphere, coupled with its coastal charm, transformed what is usually a mundane wait into an enjoyable prelude to the main event. Sipping on a cocktail with the sea breeze washing over us made us realize that this was more than just a meal—it was an experience.

Nobu’s Jalapeño Yellowtail

As we were seated, the first dish to arrive was the Jalapeño Yellowtail—a bold move for someone like me, who does not typically enjoy seafood. Going into this meal, ordering a fish dish felt like an impossible leap, and I was convinced it would not appeal to my taste. However, what transpired next was nothing short of miraculous. The yellowtail was delicate yet flavorful, its buttery texture blending perfectly with the subtle heat from the jalapeño. I was completely blown away by the harmony of flavors—so much so that we ended up ordering three plates of it. This dish alone set an incredibly high bar for the rest of the meal, as it delivered a sensory experience that no land-based dish could have matched.

Nobu’s Sashimi Tacos

Next came the much-anticipated Sashimi Tacos, a signature item on Nobu’s menu. We opted for the Ribeye and Wagyu varieties, playing it safe with red meat, my personal favorite. While the flavors were undoubtedly rich and the quality of the meat was superb, the portion size left something to be desired. For a restaurant of Nobu’s caliber, and given the premium price point, I expected more in terms of quantity. The tacos, though delicious, didn’t live up to the immense hype surrounding them. That said, they were a solid addition to the meal, but perhaps not the standout we had hoped for.

Nobu’s Ribeye With Truffle Butter Sauce

For my main course, I decided to indulge in the Ribeye with Truffle Butter Sauce, a dish that epitomized decadence. The ribeye was presented beautifully, sliced for easy consumption with chopsticks, allowing me to savor each perfectly cooked bite. The steak was tender, full of flavor, and enhanced by the rich, earthy undertones of the truffle butter. It was the type of dish that defines a high-end dining experience, crafted with precision and attention to detail.

Nobu’s Rock Shrimp

In a bold move, I also ordered the Rock Shrimp with Creamy Spicy Sauce—a first for me, as I had never eaten shrimp before. I was initially apprehensive but found myself completely captivated by the dish. The shrimp were tender and perfectly complemented by the creamy yet spicy sauce, offering a burst of flavor that was both exciting and comforting. The dish was so incredible that it has sparked a newfound appreciation for shrimp that I didn’t have before, though I fear no East Coast offering will ever match the quality of what I experienced here.

To complement the meal, the service was impeccable. The staff’s knowledge of the menu, their attentiveness, and the seamless timing between courses further elevated the dining experience. Every detail, from the presentation of the food to the table setting, was meticulously curated, ensuring that the evening unfolded without a hitch.

Nobu Malibu is not just a restaurant; it is a destination, an experience that blends the finest in Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine with the natural beauty of its coastal surroundings. While a few elements, like the sashimi tacos, did not fully meet expectations, the overall experience more than made up for it. The stunning views, unparalleled service, and culinary artistry come together to create an evening that feels both luxurious and personal.

Nobu Malibu has undoubtedly earned its Geg Star, providing an unforgettable dining journey where every element—from the first sip to the final bite—was nothing short of extraordinary.
